Root Causes of Hatred and Division Explained

Finding Unity in Diversity: A Journey from Hatred to Love

In the heart of Kabbalistic thought, there lies a profound understanding of the root causes of divisiveness. The great concealment, or "Tsimtsum" as explained by the 16th-century Kabbalist Isaac Luria, is a concept that can shed light on the origins of dissonance and hatred in our world. Imagine a cosmic Big Bang, where we are all part of one vast organism. This interconnectedness is not just a poetic notion but a fundamental truth of our existence.

When we observe nature or the human body, we see a healthy organism composed of many different parts that work together in harmony. The right arm does not hate the left arm; the heart does not despise the lungs. Similarly, in nature, flowers, trees, animals, and minerals all coexist in a powerful symbiotic relationship. Even disruptions, such as forest fires, serve a purpose in regeneration and renewal.

The Illusion of Separation

Given this inherent unity, why then does divisiveness and hatred exist? The answer lies in the concealment of our true interconnected nature. When the liver doesn’t know about the lungs, they may act independently, leading to conflict. This lack of awareness transforms diversity into divisiveness. We become blinded by our self-interest, seeing our good as separate from others’ good, rather than understanding that if one part suffers, the whole suffers.

Spiritual Awareness: The Key to Unity

In the teachings of Tanya, particularly Chapter 32, we find profound wisdom on this subject. The essence of love, it says, is when spirit dominates over matter. As long as we perceive ourselves as material beings, separated by time and space, true love remains elusive. True love emerges when we recognize our inherent unity beneath the surface differences.

Moving Beyond Hatred

So, how do we move beyond hatred and divisiveness? The key is awareness. By understanding the root cause of our separation, we can work towards a solution that goes beyond short-term fixes. We need to dig deeper, to find the spiritual unity that underlies our material differences.

Practical Steps to Cultivate Unity

  • Study: Immerse yourself in texts that speak of unity and interconnectedness. This cognitive conditioning helps shift your mindset.
  • Prayer and Meditation: Engage in practices that elevate your spirit, fostering emotional connection and empathy.
  • Kind Actions: Perform acts of kindness consistently. These behaviors reinforce the love and unity you seek to cultivate.

Stories of Transformation

Consider the story of a couple who once loved deeply but grew to despise each other. Through counseling, they were able to reconnect by focusing on something they both cared about deeply—their child. This process of rediscovering their selfless love for their child helped them to transcend their immediate conflicts and rekindle their love for each other.

This kind of transformation is possible on a larger scale as well. Even in the face of profound hatred, such as the atrocities of the Holocaust, there remains a spark of hope. By reaching deeper into our collective soul, we can find the common ground that unites us all.

A Call to Action

In this journey from darkness to light, from hatred to love, we must each take responsibility. By cultivating a deeper awareness of our interconnectedness, we can begin to heal the divisions that plague our world. This is not just a philosophical exercise but a practical, real-world mission.

Let us return to the essence of who we are, a singular unity manifesting in beautiful diversity. May we find inner harmony and extend that to those around us, creating a ripple effect that transforms the world.
